I know most of you probably track your intake in some way. My Fitness Pal, Lose It, Weight Watchers, FitBit. Anyone? I bet basically all of you. While this can definitely be an effective way to lose weight, it contradicts the mindful eating mindset. You really can’t learn to eat mindfully while tracking your calories. But you still want a way to stay accountable, right?
I use to be a tracker. Anytime I needed to check in with myself or if I’d made changes, I’d log and track for a few days, a week, to make sure I was on the right track. Not a bad way to live, but eventually, even the little bit of tracking I was doing became tedious. It’s not sustainable. So I learned to eat mindfully and intuitively.
But can you learn to eat mindfully while still keeping track of what you’re eating? The answer is yes. In fact, food journals are an effective tool for learning how to mindfully eat. As long as you’re not measuring. No measuring, no counting calories or macros. And as long as you’re not judging. No more “did I go over this macro, am I under this one, oh no I’m 2 calories over my goal”.
So what should you do? You should take pictures. My clients that are learning mindful eating techniques actually take pictures of their food and post it to my food journal app- Get Healthie- where they can receive feedback from me. With the pictures, they can keep track of all of the techniques I have them working on for mindful eating. They’re tracking, but not counting. And they’re learning. They’re learning about their bodies as they do this. They can now control what they eat organically instead of forcing themselves to stay within a certain amount of calories, or carbs, or fats. And best of all, the feedback they get from me directly can help them make adjustments as they go through my program, in small and realistic ways. No more changing your entire diet and lifestyle all at once. Simple, natural, effective ways to manage what you eat and still live your life!
